How to Care for a Handwoven African Basket
Your sisal basket has traveled a long way, and it may need a little TLC every now and then.
These unique baskets are made out of sisal, which is grown on farms near Zawadisha's headquarters in Maungu, Kenya. The leaves of the sisal plant contain fibers that are used to roll into twine once the pulp of the leaf is removed and the fiber has dried. Sisal is famous for being an extremely strong and hardy material. It is resilient even to salt water!
Here's how to care for your handmade African basket:
- If your basket is a bit misshapen when you receive it, or from use, simply spray it lightly with water and reshape it. Allow it to completely dry before using it.
- If you expose your basket to full sunlight, it will cause the colors to fade.
- Sisal is a natural product, and if it remains damp for a long period, it could mold.
- If you use your basket as a plant pot, you need to line it with a plate or dish.
- You can gently spot clean your basket, but any excessive rubbing could fade the dye.
