No two prints are alike!

Riso Prints 101

Curious about Riso prints? You came to the right place :)

What is Risograph printing?

RISO prints are made with a Risograph printer. It looks like a photocopier, but it works like a screen printer. Each color is printed separately as spot colors, creating vibrant prints with little impact on our environment.

Who created the Riso print?

The Riso Printer (Risograph) was made by the Riso Kagaku Corporation, a Japanese company founded by Noboru Hayama in Tokyo in 1946.

How does the Riso printer work?

The Riso printer turns black-and-white artwork into a stencil. Then you insert your chosen color drum into the Riso machine, and the stencil wraps tightly around it.

The machine feeds paper flat through, and it passes under the rotating drum, which prints your artwork onto the paper at high speed.

One color is printed at a time, and multicolored prints are created by switching out drums, then passing the paper through the Riso again and again until every color has been printed.

Are Riso prints sustainable and environmentally friendly?

Absolutely! Riso prints are a highly energy-efficient, sustainable printing method, making them an ethical product unmatched by other printing methods.

The cold process consumes little energy, and the Riso prints with soy-based (non-toxic) inks and stencils made from plant fibers.

Unlike litho printing, it only takes a single print for the stencil to be fully inked and ready to print.

It uses very little electricity and eliminates the need for up to 100,000 liters of water and 10,000 liters of alcohol (per year) that would normally be consumed by a typical mid-size printer.

Why art? A few questions, answered

Why does art make the perfect gift?

Because it's one of a kind, just like the person you're giving it to :) With an original, nobody else on the planet will unwrap the same piece.

People want unique gifts. And nothing is more unique than a one-of-a-kind piece of original artwork.

Every piece in Drawing From Nature is made by hand by our Creative Director, Andrea Slusarski (we call her Slu). It's a gift that doesn't get used up, tossed out, or forgotten in a drawer. It goes on a wall and gets looked at every single day, and every time they see it, they'll think of you.

Who is art the perfect gift for?

Pretty much anyone with a wall ;)

The nature lover who would rather be outside. The friend who just moved into a new place and is staring at blank walls. The person who has everything. The traveler who saves maps, ticket stubs, and pressed flowers. The creative who will notice every hand-cut detail. And yes, you. Buying art for yourself counts.

Shopping on a smaller budget? Our zines and Riso prints are a lovely way to give art without the original price tag.

Why should I start collecting art?

You don't need a gallery budget or an art degree to be a collector. You just need to buy what you love.

Collecting original and small-batch art turns your home into a reflection of what matters to you, instead of whatever was on sale at the big box store or Amazon.

Over time, each piece holds a memory of where you were in life when you found it. Start with one piece that makes you stop and look twice, then let your collection grow with you :)

Why support small artists?

When you buy from a small artist and not a big box store or Amazon, you're the reason someone gets to keep making things.

Small artists create distinct, personal pieces rather than algorithm-driven or factory-printed decor.

Your purchase supports Slu's art practice and Far Out, our small, independent shop. It pays for the paper, paint, and hours it takes to keep creating.

Small artists also take risks that big brands won't, so the work tends to be more personal, more surprising, and a whole lot more interesting ;)

How is art a tool for change?

Art has always been used as a form of expression. It exposes social inequalities, mobilizes public opinion, challenges political authority, and directly transforms communities.

On a personal level, it slows us down. In a world where we doom scroll past everything, a piece on your wall asks you to stop, look, and notice.

Slu's artwork (and all nature-inspired artwork) is all about paying attention to the places around us: the trees, the deserts, the gardens, and the way they shift with the seasons. Some of Slu's collages even give pages from thrifted books a second life.

When we notice the natural world, we care for it, and when we care, we act. Art has always been how people imagine a different future, and that can start on your own walls :)

What's a good gift for someone who loves nature?

Original nature-inspired art. It brings the outdoors inside and lasts a whole lot longer than a bouquet :)

At Far Out you'll find a collection of original mixed media collages, Riso prints, and zines by artist Andrea Slusarski, inspired by forests, deserts, gardens, and the changing seasons. Every piece is made by hand, so the hiker, gardener, camper, or bird-watcher in your life gets something nobody else has.

It's a gift with nothing to plug in and nothing to throw away. Just something beautiful on the wall that reminds them why they love being outside.

Can I buy original art for under $100?

Yes! You don't need a gallery budget to own original art. Every piece in our Drawing From Nature collection at Far Out is currently under $100.

Our one-of-a-kind mixed media originals are handmade, and our limited-edition Riso prints and quarterly zines are under $20, which makes them an easy way to start a collection or tuck a little art into a gift.

Buying direct from a small artist means your money supports the person making the work and a small, independent shop, not a big box store or Amazon ;)

Who is the artist behind Drawing From Nature?

Drawing From Nature is the work of Andrea Slusarski, a visual artist, professor, and visual journaler based in Colorado. She's also Far Out's Creative Director, and we call her Slu, Slubies, Froth Monster, and sometimes Baby.

One of Slu's favorite mediums is plein air, meaning outside and on location, in her sketchbooks. Then she brings what she sees back to the studio as collages and prints. She's a big believer in "little-c creativity," the small, daily creative acts that make life more connected and more fun, and she teaches workshops on exactly that.

When she's not making art, you'll probably find her getting shreddy on a snowboard ;)

What's the difference between an original, a Riso print, and a zine?

An original is the one-and-only piece Slu made by hand. A Riso print is a limited-edition print of her artwork. A zine is a small, foldable publication you can read and then hang on the wall.

Originals are mixed media collages, often layering images cut from thrifted books with acrylic paint, pen, and pencil. There's only one of each, so when it's gone, it's gone.

Riso prints are made on a Risograph, a printer that works like a screen printer, laying down one color at a time with soy-based inks. Ours are three-color, 11 x 17 inch prints made at Laika Press, and no two come out exactly alike.

Our zines come out four times a year, around each solstice and equinox. Each one is printed on a single 11 x 17 inch sheet with a poem, six steps for a reset, and a mini framable piece of art, and it unfolds into a Riso print for your wall :)

How do I frame and care for mixed media art?

Our art ships unframed, so you can choose a frame that fits your space and style. For paper and mixed media pieces, frame them behind glass with a mat so the artwork doesn't press against the glass.

A few tips to keep your art looking good for years:
Use acid-free mats and backing so the paper doesn't yellow.
Choose UV-protective glass if your wall gets sun.
Hang it away from direct sunlight, heaters, and humid spots like bathrooms.
Measure your piece before buying a frame, since originals vary in size. Our 11 x 17 inch Riso prints and zines fit a standard 11 x 17 frame.
