What is Risograph printing?

RISO prints are made with a Risograph printer. It looks like a photocopier, but it works like a screen printer. Each color is printed separately as spot colors, creating vibrant prints with little impact on our environment.

Who created the Riso print?

The Riso Printer (Risograph) was made by the Riso Kagaku Corporation, a Japanese company founded by Noboru Hayama in Tokyo in 1946.

How does the Riso printer work?

The Riso printer turns black-and-white artwork into a stencil. Then you insert your chosen color drum into the Riso machine, and the stencil wraps tightly around it.

The machine feeds paper flat through, and it passes under the rotating drum, which prints your artwork onto the paper at high speed.

One color is printed at a time, and multicolored prints are created by switching out drums, then passing the paper through the Riso again and again until every color has been printed.

Are Riso prints sustainable and environmentally friendly?

Absolutely! Riso prints are a highly energy-efficient, sustainable printing method, making them an ethical product unmatched by other printing methods.

The cold process consumes little energy, and the Riso prints with soy-based (non-toxic) inks and stencils made from plant fibers.

Unlike litho printing, it only takes a single print for the stencil to be fully inked and ready to print.

It uses very little electricity and eliminates the need for up to 100,000 liters of water and 10,000 liters of alcohol (per year) that would normally be consumed by a typical mid-size printer.
